Porcini & Morel Seasons Merge…

Wild mushrooms come and go with the weather … about every two weeks brings a different shroomy composition … something comes into season, comes into peak season, or goes out of season in any little micro-climate.  There are two broad wild mushroom peak seasons in my mind… morels in the spring and everything else in the Fall.

Everyone has their preferences, but in my opinion, there are two pinnacles of the year: one is happening right now and the other happens for a few weeks in October when the early fall mushrooms (lobster, chanterelle) overlap with the late fall mushrooms (black trumpet, hedgehog and matsutake among others).

I always say this, but right now is the best time of year because morels and porcinis are currently cohabitating in my fridge.  I love my fall mushrooms, but there is something about fresh morels and fresh porcinis.

Here is a clearinghouse of our morel and porcini recipes, in case you find yourself with a happy marriage in the fridge.  (currently our wild mushroom sampler is 1 lb. porcini, 1 lb. morel).
