Let’s face it, even the world’s most committed environmentalists don’t feel like doing the dishes sometimes. And even people who consider disposable plates a modern miracle hate the way paper plates go floppy.
If only there was something that would make both these groups happy…something sturdy like a disposable plastic plate…yet biodegradable so your one evening of freedom from dishwashing wouldn’t languish forever in a landfill.
There’s that corn plastic stuff, but as the corn biodiesel movement discovered, we actually need corn for other things, like food, and spreading the supply out amongst multiple applications can increase the cost of that food.
Wood could be the answer. If harvested carefully, it is a renewable resource, and wood breaks down over time.
But what if there was something better than plain wood? Palm leaves fit the bill. Far more thick and tough than the leaves you find on your lawn, they can be easily heat-pressed into all manner of shapes without too much effort or processing. They don’t get soggy, your knives and forks don’t go through them easily, and like other leaves the trees simply discard them when they’re done with them.
In fact, that’s how the leaves used in palm leaf plates are gathered, off the ground, not off the tree. No trees are cut down or harmed in any way…this product reuses and recycles nature to create a product that will free you from the dishes without making you feel guilty. Palm plates are even compostable, if you’re a do-it-yourself recycler.
