Seattle Bloggers: Be the first to test-drive a couple cutting-edge culinary items

We just got two amazing products in today for photography that are so new that they aren’t available for sale anywhere in the US yet.  We just finished shooting them, and we’re offering samples to one Seattle blogger who’d like to come by our office in Lower Queen Anne, pick them up, and have your way with them.

Dulse Buttons:
Dulse button flowers are tiny (5mm by 4mm), but you only need one.  They fill the mouth with astonishing sweetness (1,500 times sweeter than sugar) and a complex blend of herb/spice flavors: mint, thyme, and anise/licorice.

If you’ve tried our Szechuan buttons, imagine a similarly stimulating sensory explosion, but of flavor rather than electricity.  We can’t wait to start trying these in cocktails and desserts…in particular, we’ve heard they take ice cream, berries, and homemade marshmallows to a whole new level.

Popcorn Shoots:  Grown in the dark to preserve their pale yellow color, popcorn shoots have a bean-sprout-like crunch, and a flavor that starts with sweet corn, then flows into a grassy finish reminiscent of wheatgrass.  “Popcorn” is not just a name, they actually are grown from a special variety of popcorn kernels.

  1. Justin, I’ve used popcorn shoots for about four years. I can only take a few of them at a time, otherwise the whole grass experience gets a little overwhelming. I often use them for garnish on my vegetarian plates whose theme is corn.

They have to be very fresh. With age, the sweet corn flavor becomes nothing but herbaceous grassiness and worse, the texture goes from edible to stringy grass.

They are among the easiest things to sprout on your own, if you are of a mind to.

Never tried dulse buttons, but I have worked with other crazy stuff such as eyeball plant, similar to Szechuan buttons in many respects. So many cool ingredients, so little time. Keep on playing!
