We gave one lucky recipient a 10lb Heirloom Potato Sampler so that they could see and taste the difference between these taters and your run-of-the-mill varieties. Potatoes aren’t boring anymore!

This sampler included a veritable rainbow of options: Purple Majesty, Bintje (yellow), Desiree (pink), Red and Blue potatoes.

  1. I would like to try alllllllll of them 🙂 I’d probably make a tri-colored truffled potato salad or maybe a funky shepherd’s pie…and then I’d blog it on my food blog for the whole world to see!

  2. I would love to try any and all of them! My daughters favorite color is purple so I would have to choose purple! Purple potatoe soup, purple mashed potatoes, purple twice baked potatoes,the possibilies are endless!

  3. I’d love to see the pink potatoes. And I’d probably make a vegetable tian with all those different colored potatoes and green & yellow squash.

  4. I would take a mix of these, slice them medium thin, add a bit of oil, salt and pepper and maybe a little onion and/or mushroom; wrap in tinfoil and cook on the grill. Serve with grilled Kangaroo. Yum.

    Alternately, chop them chunky, again toss in a bit of oil & my secret seasoning mix, and roast in the oven. Serve with the same ‘roo.

  5. One thing I’ve been missing from New Orleans is the Pommes Soufflé at Arnaud’s. It’s kinda like a French fry balloon. Might be cook to make a pink version. I’ve used purple potatoes a few times, but I’ve never come across the others. I’ve also been wanting to try an app using potato planks as the base rather than a baguette, etc. Heck, I don’t know – would depend on the size and color, but it would be a fun chance to redeem myself after the Chocolate Wild Rice Krispie fiasco. 😉

  6. I would like to try the Purple Majesty and the German Butterball.
    maybe, slice the purple majesty season and bake them.
    And with the German Butterball, I would mash them and cook them with a light cheese. 😀 my mouth is drooling. medium rare steak on the side.

    And for my nephews and nieces, I’m do homemade rainbow potato chips for snacks. french fries and chicken with sprite.

    my parents would want baked and stuffed with all kinds of stuff.

  7. I would love love love to try the Bintje for some pillowy, out-of-this-world gnocchi dressed with black garlic, english peas, chanterelles, maybe some pancetta and a bit of cream. Adore!

  8. I would love to try all of them because I have never had that many different kinds of potatoes. It would be really fun to try and cook with those kinds of potatoes and see how they would taste. And to see the look on my daughters face when she doesn’t realize what they are.

  9. I have a very dear friend who absolutely loves the Wizard of Oz. I would love to make him a Birthday meal when he visits that would truly be over the rainbow!!!

  11. I have been wanting to make a potato pizza for awhile (a la jim lahey) and I think a brightly-colored potato would make it perfect! Perhaps the purple majesty would do well?

  13. I buy a bag of mixed color potatoes, boil them whole, cut in half put in a pan with butter,olive oil, garlic, smoked salt and pepper cook them for a few minutes till they absorb the flavors and my family loves them.

  14. I would love to try the Purple Majesty the most, but love all kinds of potatoes. I would wrap in foil with butter and rosemary and roast. Then serve with greens like asparagus or broccoli and sauteed yellow, orange and red bell peppers to make a plate full of color.

  15. I am a breakfast cook for a large hotel chain in New York City. I would love to try all of the colors of the heirloom potatoes, and I would make taste the rainbow homefries. I believe it would wow our customers due to the variety of colors, textures, and flavors.

  16. I’ve tried red and purple potatoes before but not the blue ones. I would love to try them. Yes, potatoes are not just for side dishes and I can’t wait to make some Hasselback Potatoes roasted with garlic and herbs with all different kinds and colors. That would truly look like rainbows. 🙂

  17. I’ve never heard of, let alone SEEN blue potatoes! I’d love to make some roasted accordion potatoes or a potato gratin/ratatouille with these!

  18. I want to do a taste test and try them all! Mostly though, I am intrigued by the purple and blue potatoes. I would like to do a roasted vegetable hash – simple, deep flavors to really highlight the different potato varieties.

  19. The purple majesty! What a glorious name, how can I choose anything else above that? I would love to cook that into a multi-colored stew.

  20. How exciting! My first choice would be the purple majesty, however, the assortment of colors of the entire mix would be a wonderful addition to our Thanksgiving table.
    I don’t have a recipe yet, but I can tell you it would be something where I would leave the skins on, maybe roast? or some au gratin but in a lighter sauce so colors “shine” through.So many ideas!

  21. Purple majesty is an amazing name, but I adore blue potatoes! I would make beautiful multicolored potato chips and roasted potatoes! I would say mashed potatoes but I wouldn’t want to lose the pretty color in mashing them.

  22. Honestly while I can think of a lot of recipes I could make, I think that I would have a potato tasting of each potato by itself. I would make a duet of baked and mashed for each potato and compare them. Yum!

  23. potatoes are my favorite food and i’m absolutely obsessed with them! i love potatoes in any form, you name it! these heirloom variety would be great for thanksgiving dinner. roasted garlic potatoes of all colors. these colors would be very festive and harvest-like. or maybe pomme frittes with different dipping sauces. followed by colorful potato pancakes for the kids the next morning!

  24. I want to try the Purple Majesty but if I’m the winner, I will bake all different colors of the Heirloon Potato with onion, garlic, herbs, butter, olive oil, salt & pepper and taste the difference of them at one time.

  25. I’m a bit of a purist, to me there is nothing better than the pink Desiree potato boiled until just tender, sprinkled with a pinch of sea salt, tossed with a knob of sweet butter and maybe, just to guild the lily, topped with some chopped fresh flat leaf parsley.

    Nothing better!

  26. I’d like to try the Viking Purple and German Butterball.
    With the Viking Purple I’d make garlic mashed potatoes and with the German butterballs potato and carmelized onion tarts.

  27. I would use the red or pink potatoes in a potato salad recipe for Christmas. Adding green to it with celery will be very festive. I love all things potato so would use them in all sorts of dishes if I won.

  28. Im totally embarrassed to admit I have never heard of or seen heirloom potatoes before! I love purple potatoes so I would definitely try those first 🙂

  29. I’m a sucker for purple, so definitely those. I love roasted potatoes with herbs. I’d like to roast all of the colors for a pretty presentation!

  30. Probably the Mountain Rose, but I’m a sucker for any potato I can get my hands on. I’d most likely end up making my twist on patatas bravas – little deep fried cubes of potato spiked with some hot smoked paprika and a cooling yogurt sauce. Awesome.
