This is a food, we swear. It’s not a former food like barf or poop. It is an actual food that we sell…and, believe it or not, it is quite tasty.
First person to leave a comment below correctly naming it (any of its pseudonyms will do) will receive their choice of the pictured item or a nice little package of food goodies from our store.

Sea Urchin
It looks awful…I’m thinking some kind of mushroom.
It looks like huitlacoche.
cornsmut!
Could it be the filling from one of your ravioli? I think one has squid ink in the filling, and that’s what this reminds me of.
It just came to me…it may be something popular in Mexico. I can’t remember the name but it’s in the corn family and I think it’s fungi.
Geoduck?
Did any of us get it right?
Thanks all for taking a shot. Joan, you were close. Shylah and FishMama, you are both right…but, since Shylah got it first…Shylah gets the goodies.
Cuitlacoche, (aka huitlacoche, corn smut, corn fungus, devil’s corn, and Mexican truffle) long considered a blight by American corn growers, is held in much higher esteem south of the border. This fungus infects ears of corn and replaces their kernels with similarly sized black nodes. In terms of their flavor and texture these nodes are similar to some mushrooms, tasting earthy with a hint of smokiness. Read more: http://www.marxfoods.com/Cuitlacoche
Shylah…let me know whether you want a can of corn smut or a surprise! For some reason…that felt really funny to say 😉
