Healthy Beef Alternatives for Grilling Season

If you are looking for a healthier alternative to beef, but don’t want to give up red meat, here’s a couple options for you:

bison
Bison Meat (aka buffalo meat) is probably the most beef-like of all the game meats we offer, and is high protein (making you stay full longer…less snacking!), low cholesterol (less than skinless chicken) and fat (less than a third as much fat as similar cuts of beef), and high in heart-healthy iron.  We offer a full line of bison steaks as well as bison frankfurters (bison hot dogs) and bison burgers

Ostrich Meat is another good beef analogue.  Its flavor is slightly smoky and sweet, but other than that very beefy with a nice steak texture.  Ostrich is essentially a game bird that tastes and cooks like beef, so it brings all the health benefits of poultry to your plate.  In fact, with less fat, cholesterol, and calories (plus more iron) it’s healthier than skinless chicken or turkey!  Imagine having an ostrich burger that’s better for you than a grilled chicken sandwich!

For those looking to add Australian flair to their grill, we also offer Kangaroo Meat.  ‘Roo meat is extremely lean and low in cholesterol but brings a lot of flavor to the party, making it an Aussie grilling favorite.  Kangaroo meat’s flavor is beefy with a hint of smoke, and it is a definite office taste test winner.  Consider swapping your usual beef burgers for kangaroo burgers or make your own patties from our ground kangaroo meat.

Other exotic beef alternatives that your barbeque guests will be excited to try include llama meat, and (believe it or not) yak meat.  Not only do both of these meats offer lower fat and cholesterol with higher iron levels, but yaks (like ducks) carry most of their fat in an outside layer that can be easily trimmed away to make them even leaner.

Still can’t give up the beef?  Consider switching from conventional beef to grass-fed beef.  Grassfed beef, when compared to conventional beef, has been shown to be lower in saturated fat and higher in vitamins A and E.  It is even slightly higher in heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids as well as other healthy fats.

Mmmm, we love beef alternatives in my family! We actually had some yak ribeye steaks for a fun extra dish on Thanksgiving that were phenomenally good.
